Ashbourne Lantern Parade

Ashbourne, the picturesque market town on the edge of the National Park, is famed for its annual Ashbourne Lantern Spectacular.

The event is a piece of living theatre that transforms the historic streets into a wonderland of light, music and colour.

A Half-Mile of Glowing Art

The Ashbourne Lantern Spectacular takes place on Friday 5th December, running from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

As the late-autumn darkness descends, hundreds of beautifully handcrafted willow and paper lanterns begin their journey through the town. Imagine a winding river of gentle candlelight and glowing colours, carried by members of the local community.

These lanterns are works of art—created over months in community workshops supported by Ashbourne Arts—and feature everything from whimsical animals to festive symbols. Keep an eye out for the truly massive creations that wow the crowds every year, like the famous polar bear, the magnificent dragon, and the giant gingerbread men!

Rhythms, Lights and Late-Night Charm

The procession itself is a sensory experience. The gentle light show is accompanied by pulsating rhythms, dynamic choreography and dramatic lighting that bring the towering figures to life. It’s an energetic, moving parade that captures the unique community spirit of the town.

The festivities don’t stop with the parade:

Late-Night Shopping

Ashbourne’s independent shops stay open late, giving you a chance to browse unique gifts and festive goodies in a relaxed, magical atmosphere.

Market Stalls and Street Food

The Market Place and surrounding streets come alive with market stalls and street food vendors. Warm up with a gourmet hot chocolate, grab a festive snack, or find a perfect handcrafted Christmas present.

Entertainment

Expect lively street entertainment to fill the night, creating a truly festive buzz. This year often features dazzling live acts, such as performers inside a giant snow globe!

Making a Night of It

The Lantern Spectacular is the perfect way to spend a Friday night on your Peak District getaway. Since the event kicks off at 5:00 pm (with the main parade starting around 6:30 pm), you have plenty of time to enjoy a crisp day of walking the Peak District hills before heading into Ashbourne.

You can take advantage of free parking in town car parks from 2:00 pm. So, arrive early, settle in and explore the craft fair in the Town Hall. The hall is open until 9 pm. This leaves plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and soak in the pre-parade excitement.
