Our reviews are as good as our views
We love Wheeldon Trees and are definitely not shy in telling everyone! However what really matters is what our customers think. Here you’ll find some of our latest Trip Advisor reviews and can read what people really think following their visit to our beautiful Peak District cottage retreat.
Walkers Rest is the best cottage for two we’ve ever stopped in. Everything is welcoming and the standard of the cottage is excellent. The welcome pack is a lovely touch... read more and was well appreciated as was the honesty shop for good quality , unusual treats.
As we live near a busy and noisy motorway, the absolute peace and quiet was unbelievable. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time sitting on the outdoor comfy sofas just looking at the spectacular view, with the obligatory glass of wine. One bottle of which was in our welcome pack!
We will definitely be back at some point. Bakewell, Buxton and multiple other small villages are all within easy reach. Chatsworth is also convenient and when we visited noticed a deal Wheeldon had with Chatsworth for tickets.
Thank you Hazel and Steve for welcoming us as you did.
With our best wishes for your ongoing future success.

Amazing stay at the Peak District - perfect with kids - We had the most amazing stay in the Mycock Cottage. Everything we needed was there. We didn't have to bring anything like sheets, towels and cooking supplies, which is ideal... read more when you're travelling with a toddler. There was also a welcome tote with stuff like coffee, cookies and butter. On top of that you could get some groceries at the honesty shop, borrow things like a high chair, kids carrier and stair gate and there was a playroom with toys and games. The area around the cottages is beautiful and peaceful. You can easily visit the whole Peak District from here, but you don't need to leave if you simply got here to take a walk, bike or relax. We will definitely come back here.

Peace in the Peaks - Having enjoyed a July 2023 stay in Ollerenshaw, we returned for the late August bank holiday to stay in Priestley Cottage. Wheeldon Trees is an ideal base for exploring... read more the southern Peak District from the front door, and feels peacefully "out of the way". Both cottages we visited had been refurbished recently, so were comfortable and clean, but also unintrusively modern. From the Echo Dot welcoming us with music (thank you, Alexa) to the smart TV (hello, Netflix), to the free 7kW car charger, and gourmet honesty shop with local produce, we could choose our own level of separation from "normal" life.
We took most of one day hiking over the summits of Parkhouse and Chrome Hills as part of the "Dragon's Back" and looping in Hollins Hill on the route back - dramatic views and moderately challenging despite being around 400m each. The nearest pub is the Pack Horse Inn in Crowdecote, just under half an hour's walk away from Wheeldon Trees which means you've earned that pudding. Regardless of what we did, a return to the cottage, a warm shower and tea, with feet up to read a book or watch a movie made for a series of supremely relaxing days and a rewarding break.

Wheeldon Trees: A happy place to be! - This was our eighth family holiday at Wheeldon Trees, our tenth overall!
It really is our happy place! The accommodation is so good with extremely comfortable cottages supplied with the... read more sort of china and glassware that you would be very happy to have at home. The amount of baby stuff that can be borrowed is phenomenal and means it’s much easier to bring small people. There is also a wide range of toys and games to borrow.
This time we took the newly available Farmhouse as one of our three lets. It gave us an ideal base for our family of thirteen to cook, eat round a large table and to have two sitting rooms to allow for a variety of different activities. We asked Steve in advance about a barbecue and he and Hazel provided us with a good one which was well used.
The air hockey in the Long Room provided lots of pleasure and we enjoyed a tournament in which everyone from four to seventy five participated! The views are amazing and the sunsets to treasure. Running up High Wheeldon is a daily pleasure for most of the party. The bicycles were also taken out on a couple of days.
Hazel, Steve and their team are so welcoming and thoughtful. We would really hope to return again and cannot recommend it highly enough!

A rare gem of a place you'll return to again and again. - I'm reluctant to write this review as I don't want this wonderful slice of luxury to be booked up when I want to come again! My second visit, the last... read more 7 years ago with much younger children and different owners. It was good then but it is sublime now. Steve and Hazel were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the little touches of free condiments and the honesty shop make this such a rare gem of a place. Everything you could want and more is supplied in the cottage (I stayed in Elliott) and of the highest spec. From a tray for dirty boots to head torches supplied, the elements are also catered for! Gorgeously comfortable beds, a welcome hamper, a games room, a little courtyard and alexa add up to as comfortable a stay as is possible when single parenting!
The location is stunning with High Wheeldon right behind the Cottages and an easy climb for even little legs to feel they've achieved. Emergency ice cream and chocolate are available in the honesty shop, and Buxton is only a 10-15min drive away, whilst the ever popular Mam Tor is only 25mins. Peaceful and tranquil. The only consideration I'd have for future bookings is that Elliott cottage was quite dark downstairs and we often spend a bit of time in the accommodation chilling out. I will most definitely be back!

First Class Cottage - Definitely recommend for comfort, peace and quiet. - Returning visit to Wheeldon Trees after 14 years. Stayed in Priestley Cottage for five nights. Every need was catered for and the Welcome Pack a very kind and generous touch, we enjoyed a glass of the chilled wine sat at the outside tables admiring the fabulous views and listening to the birds, cows and sheep. First class Derbyshire retreat. - We stayed in a one bed cottage at Wheeldon Trees for one week. The cottage and furnishings were superb - well thought out, top quality and more than we expected.... read more The welcome pack included the things that meant we could relax as soon as we walked through the door - teabags, coffee, milk butter etc., as well as treats which were very much enjoyed later (wine, chocs etc). The location is ideal, being quiet but very close to several lovely towns and villages, so we never had to travel too far for a day out or food. The onside honesty shop was great; treats such as ice cream, snacks, pizza plus essentials such as milk. But little extras such as jams, condiments and even fruit were on the house, which made us feel really looked after.
The EV charger was a god send though. And well used by several guests. Steve and Hazel could not be more helpful and went out of their way to ensure we were looked after.
We took advantage of the discounted tickets to Chatsworth House available through our hosts, saving us £10. Really recommend this. Although the weather was pants during our week, the cottage was so comfortable that we were able to fully relax there and enjoy sometime indoors watching Netflix and sampling the local cheeses and wine.
One restaurant to recommend is The Seafood Cave and Grill in Matlock Bath. An gem hidden in the main street between the many fish and chip shops.... superb, high quality fish dishes, and a fair few meat ones. Best meals we have had in a varying time.
So, all in all, we highly recommend Wheeldon Trees.

The welcome pack was great and the kitchen was very well equipped too. The views were fantastic, with walks available from the door. The games room was a hit and it was great to be able to grab a book to read. There's plenty to do in the surrounding areas and a good local pub not too far away. The location is close to Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock and a fabulous village called Hartington. There's an equipment store that I guarantee will solve your problem if you've forgotten anything. And we are definitely planning a return visit which speaks volumes if you ask me.

Truly a jewel accommodation - Amazing cottage and amazing hosts. Everything in the house was incredibly high quality, well put together, and functional. We travelled with a young toddler (2 1/2 years), and Steve and... read more Hazel were able to provide us with everything we could possibly need, from highchairs to bed bumpers to stair gates - they were really a treat to deal with and went the extra mile to give us the best possible service, down to sourcing a delicious gluten-free cake for my wife's birthday, allowing us to do an early check-in, and letting us stay one extra day when we decided we loved the place so much we didn't want to leave!
The area is incredible and there are some very good pubs and excellent walks that can be reached from the cottages - for when it rains (and it does), the "long room" has the best assorment of games, movies, books and toys that I've ever seen!

A pretty piece of Peak paradise - Writer’s block is a terrible curse for any budding author. Words won’t flow and the writer will find anything and everything more interesting or important in order to avoid sitting... read more down and stringing together a few sentences.
When it descended on me, I would often be found vacuuming the carpets, polishing the furniture, or hanging out the washing. My wife has become a big fan of my periods of procrastination as she knows our home will be spotless.
It was during just such a period that I decided drastic action was required if I wanted to ever complete the crime thriller I’ve been working on for more than two years.
I’d read about other authors who had taken themselves away to writing retreats, sometimes with fantastic results. It seems that a change of routine, and perhaps a view of cows and countryside, can unblock the creative flow quicker than Mr Muscle clears sinks.
I guess the fresh air and bucolic bliss combine to act like some sort of Senokot for the brain.
So, I arrived at Wheeldon Trees Cottages, at Earl Sterndale near Buxton, armed with a laptop, a notebook, and great expectations. I was flying solo, with just my four-pawed friend for company, so I had booked a dog-friendly cottage. It was well equipped and had plenty of room for three adults.
After taking a turn off the A515, a pleasant drive through the fields and hills brings you to this little piece of Peak paradise.
As you arrive at Wheeldon you are greeted by husband and wife team Steve and Hazel who have carefully and stylishly crafted this high class rural retreat of nine cosy cottages and a fabulous farmhouse.
A welcome tote bag packed with goodies such as cookies, eggs, locally blended coffee and tea bags, plus a bottle of wine, is a lovely touch. In the fridge you’ll find a slab of butter and some milk for that much-needed cuppa after a long journey.
Wheeldon ushers you in with a wonderfully warm welcome and the views of the surrounding hills and valleys are something to behold, whatever the weather.
Situated at the foot of High Wheeldon, keen walkers are spoilt for choice with plenty of routes direct from your doorstep. You’ll find a collection of recommended walks in the information book supplied, all laminated so you can take them with you in all weathers.
I enjoyed several walks but chose not to wander too far as my furry companion is getting too old for the long treks we used to enjoy. We took a stroll down the road to the centre of Earl Sterndale, coming back uphill along a public footpath across lovely National Trust land.
After working up an appetite we took a short drive to the High Peak Bookstore and Café where I enjoyed a very tasty sandwich and my pedigree chum appreciated the free dog biscuits. The café serves a wide selection of dishes, including plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. But be warned – it is extremely popular even on days when you might expect it to be quiet, so be prepared to queue for a table for a short while. It’s worth the wait.
The next day we walked down the hill and this time took a left turn to Crowdefoot, which sits on the border of Derbyshire and the Staffordshire Moorlands. The views are simply sensational and, in the centre of the small village, the Pack Horse Inn serves hearty food and a selection of real ales.
A little further on you will find the larger village of Longnor, which has three pubs, two cafes, a chip shop and a post office.
Further afield, the rather special thermal spa town of Buxton is just a 10 minute drive away, while the pretty town of Bakewell, situated on the banks of the River Wye, is a 20 minute drive. Fifteen minutes along the road to Ashbourne you’ll find picturebook pretty Tissington, where you can join the famous trail.
For cyclists, part of the national cycle network begins just a few yards away from the entrance to Wheeldon. Steve and Hazel have very generously supplied electric bikes which are free to use. The extra bit of ooomph provided by the battery will suit those who enjoy the freedom of cycling but are perhaps not as fit as they once were.
This is a magical location that provides a huge portion of food for the soul. It turns out it can also inspire authors suffering a bad case of writer’s block. I left for home with an even deeper love of the Peak District and 10,000 words closer to completing my crime thriller.

22 February 2023

We had an excellent family Christmas in both Sheldon (ideal for those less mobile) and Elliott cottages. We spent most of our time in Sheldon as it was more spacious for the joint gatherings and it also meant we could enjoy the beautiful valley views (when the clouds cleared!).
It was a pleasure to return to Derbyshire and the beautiful Peak District. I echo the positive comments others have made. I wholeheartedly recommend and would happily return again in future.

Just returned from a lovely relaxed weekend at Wheeldon Trees Cottages. We were two couples staying in Sheldon Cottage which is wheelchair accessible, all on one level and nicely... read more laid out, very tastefully decorated and wonderfully clean. There was a welcome bag full of quality goodies and the general impression was one of very high quality without being stuffy at all.
Steve, the owner, popped round to welcome us, check that we had everything we needed and share some tips about local walks and so on before leaving us to enjoy our weekend. We cooked for ourselves and were not short of any utensils or equipment and the neat expanding table meant we had plenty of room to dine.
We liked that ther were lots of thoughtful little touches such as headtorches and umbrellas by the door, a little bottle of olive oil for cooking and so on. It's clear that there is someone paying great attention to detail here.
The four of us took Steve's advice and borrowed the e-bikes for a ride up the Tissington trail, which is an old railway track turned into a very pleasant cycle and walking path. The e-bikes were brand new and very simple to operate after a couple of minutes explanation.
The scenery around the area really is extremely beautfiul, with a stunning view from our cottage. If we had been staying longer we could have used the maps for what looked like some great walks straight from the front door.
There's a secluded little patio area at the back of the cottage which would be perfect for a summer's evening but it was too chilly for that, although the cottage itself was lovely and toasty with undefloor heating throughout - powered by a ground source heat pump from what it says in the handbook. The night sky was wonderfully clear so we did a little star gazing too.
The bathrooms were perfectly clean - they really looked like they had just been installed and the bed was very comfortable.
We didn't use most of the available facilities (honesty shop, laundry room, EV charger, games room and so on) but they looked every bit as tasteful and well thought out as the cottage itself.
Overall - a wonderful, cosy place to stay for a quiet and relaxing break. A very high quality cottage with a warm and friendly feeling. Just lovely.

The area itself was fantastic for walking/hiking and we had a good walk from the door of the cottage out to Chrome Hill. From the first point of contact it was clear we were dealing with the crème de la crème of self-catering holidays. We had a specific request after booking to ensure... read more the stay was special for our children, one of whom is autistic. Steve responded promptly to our emails with the perfect solution. The online booking system is smooth and user-friendly, and we felt confident that this would be a lovely holiday from the outset.
On arrival, the cleanliness of the cottage could not be faulted - from the kitchen and all the crockery and cutlery, which was immaculate, to the bedding in both bedrooms - freshly laundered, clean and inviting, which is super important for me to feel at home. In addition to this, the additional touches like the welcome pack and the complimentary toiletries gave a luxe feel to the stay; it married the kind of boutique B&B we would have stayed in before we became parents with everything we now need as a family of four.
The facilities such as the honesty shop - with Halloween sweets for the children - and the games room with the air hockey table really show that Steve and Hazel have thought about their guests and anticipated their needs. Feeling welcomed without any sense of intrusion is a delicate balance but at Wheeldon Trees, this balance has been achieved to perfection. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and the walks from the cottage offer some of the most breathtaking scenery I think I've ever seen.
This is a very classy establishment run by people who not only know hospitality but are quite clearly redefining it for the needs of the modern family. I can't fault it - Steve and Hazel, thank you so much. We had an absolute blast. Our son - who usually asks when we're going home every night when we're on holiday - didn't ask us once for the entirety of our stay. Instinctively, he felt at home. This was the greatest gift of all for us, and it made our year.
We will be back!
Thank you, Wheeldon Trees - Steve and Hazel, for giving us some fabulous family memories to cherish. xxx
