Our reviews are as good as our views
We love Wheeldon Trees and are definitely not shy in telling everyone! However what really matters is what our customers think. Here you’ll find some of our latest Trip Advisor reviews and can read what people really think following their visit to our beautiful Peak District cottage retreat.
Peaceful, private and a touch of luxury. My husband and I wanted to get away for a week for some quiet time. Very lucky we found Wheeldon Cottages! It was perfect. We stayed in Priestly Cottage. They think of everything - from the welcome basket to the restaurant recommendations. They have a 'pantry' supply with items you may have forgotten (or didn't know you wanted!). All the conveniences are in the cottage and it was a perfect place for us to relax. Beautiful scenery - lots of great walks if that's what you want. And many pubs/restaurants close by. Good location for Chatsworth House too.

Weekend stay We stayed in Elliott cottage for 2 nights for my daughter’s birthday. We found the cottage to be cosy, warm and well equipped. The attraction for us is we only live an hour away in Leicestershire so it’s easy to get to for a weekends break. We have many short breaks and this is up there as one of the nicest cottages we’ve stayed at. We did a walk on the Tissington trail on Saturday and on the Sunday had tickets for Chatsworth Christmas. We would recommend this as a place to stay for our family and friends and hope to return ourselves in 2024.

A long weekend in the Peak District What a wonderful destination! Such a luxurious cottage. We stayed in Walkers Rest for 3 nights and I have to say it was the best appointed cottage we’ve ever booked. Wine cooling in the fridge on arrival. A real gem. The weather was wild and windy which added to the beauty of the local area. All in all a fantastic stay

A wonderful stay that will leave you warm and fuzzy inside! Amazing first trip the Peak District and we couldn't go wrong with this amazing accommodation. Not only is it beautifully decorated with touches of luxury but it is the little things that count. The welcome tote bag full of local goodies was so thoughtful. It really started our stay off with a warm fuzzy feeling. Thank you Wheeldon Trees Cottages for a wonderful stay! We will certainly recommend you to others and will be back some day.

Beautiful farmhouse in a fantastic location! We stayed in the farmhouse as a group of 4 adults and 1 toddler and everything was fantastic. The youngest in the group was 2 and the oldest in their 80s and this place really does cater for everybody!
The farmhouse itself has been so well thought out, with lovely decor and everything you would need for a self catered stay. On the first night we cooked and forgot a couple of ingredients - the honesty shop on site made sure we had what we needed alongside some extra treats!
We loved that there was a snug with a TV and then also a separate living area. The beds were really comfortable and everything was immaculate.
Our 2 year old loved the little play area on site and also loved seeing some sheep nearby! The location was great - nice and peaceful with fantastic views, but also close to places to eat and places to visit.
Steve and Hazel were really welcoming and the welcome tote in the house was such a nice touch.
We would absolutely come back and are already looking at dates in 2024! More

Perfect This place is perfect! I came with my dog Seamus… he absolutely loved it, as did I. Very homely and cosy, I and great location with great views, very peaceful, great to get away, forgot about everything, and clear the mind. The whole place is effortless. A real home from home.

Wonderful Accomodation We had a long weekend at Wheldon Tree Cottages, staying in Walker's Rest, and would heartily recommend it. The cottages are in a beautiful location in the hills and have been renovated and equipped to a very high standard. The kitchen equipment is extensive and good quality; the bed is large and very comfortable; the shower is powerful and the furnishings are stylish. What we also loved was the thought that had gone in to the place - a bag of provisions on your arrival, little notes scattered around telling you how things work - and the many little gestures of generosity from the hosts.
We will certainly look to visit again in the future. More

Perfect short break. Our fourth visit but first since change of ownership. Walker's Rest has undergone subtle and welcome enhancements. The cottage was spotless and extremely well equipped, the bed and furniture were very comfortable and the whole complex was tidy and fresh looking. The Games Room was impressive and the welcome pack and Honesty Shop were much appreciated. We fully expect to return. More

Great getaway I had an incredible stay at this charming cottage in a serene and peaceful part of the country. The quiet atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, complete with cows and sheep, made it a perfect getaway. The availability of electric bikes added convenience for exploring nearby attractions. Steve was exceptionally helpful with his suggestions and advice. The honesty shop stocked with various foods and snacks was a delightful touch. Overall, this place is nothing short of amazing - a quiet, peaceful, and breathtaking escape that I’ll always remember.

Peaceful and relaxing stay Another amazing stay at Wheeldon Trees. The site is so peaceful and relaxing with just to right amount of attentiveness from Steve and Hazel. The cottage a lovely mixture of old and new, is equipped with everything you could possibly need and has comfortable beds and sofas to perfect the stay. We walked and cycled from our cottage door, and, as we stayed in a heatwave, watched the sunset every evening from the communal sofas in the grounds.

A slice of heaven! We stayed at The Farmhouse for 3 nights and was blown away by it’s luxury. The house was well equipped with everything you could need as well as the added special touches. Steve & Hazel have thought about everything at Wheeldon Trees, from the honesty shop packed full of necessities and goodies to the fabulous games room! The location was very peaceful with the only traffic being the cows crossing the road. Cannot wait to visit again!

Welcoming high quality experience. Walkers Rest is the best cottage for two we’ve ever stopped in. Everything is welcoming and the standard of the cottage is excellent. The welcome pack is a lovely touch and was well appreciated as was the honesty shop for good quality , unusual treats.
As we live near a busy and noisy motorway, the absolute peace and quiet was unbelievable. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time sitting on the outdoor comfy sofas just looking at the spectacular view, with the obligatory glass of wine. One bottle of which was in our welcome pack!
We will definitely be back at some point. Bakewell, Buxton and multiple other small villages are all within easy reach. Chatsworth is also convenient and when we visited noticed a deal Wheeldon had with Chatsworth for tickets.
Thank you Hazel and Steve for welcoming us as you did.
With our best wishes for your ongoing future success.

Amazing stay at the Peak District - perfect with kids We had the most amazing stay in the Mycock Cottage. Everything we needed was there. We didn't have to bring anything like sheets, towels and cooking supplies, which is ideal when you're travelling with a toddler. There was also a welcome tote with stuff like coffee, cookies and butter. On top of that you could get some groceries at the honesty shop, borrow things like a high chair, kids carrier and stair gate and there was a playroom with toys and games. The area around the cottages is beautiful and peaceful. You can easily visit the whole Peak District from here, but you don't need to leave if you simply got here to take a walk, bike or relax. We will definitely come back here.

Peace in the Peaks Having enjoyed a July 2023 stay in Ollerenshaw, we returned for the late August bank holiday to stay in Priestley Cottage. Wheeldon Trees is an ideal base for exploring the southern Peak District from the front door, and feels peacefully "out of the way". Both cottages we visited had been refurbished recently, so were comfortable and clean, but also unintrusively modern. From the Echo Dot welcoming us with music (thank you, Alexa) to the smart TV (hello, Netflix), to the free 7kW car charger, and gourmet honesty shop with local produce, we could choose our own level of separation from "normal" life.
We took most of one day hiking over the summits of Parkhouse and Chrome Hills as part of the "Dragon's Back" and looping in Hollins Hill on the route back - dramatic views and moderately challenging despite being around 400m each. The nearest pub is the Pack Horse Inn in Crowdecote, just under half an hour's walk away from Wheeldon Trees which means you've earned that pudding. Regardless of what we did, a return to the cottage, a warm shower and tea, with feet up to read a book or watch a movie made for a series of supremely relaxing days and a rewarding break.

Wheeldon Trees: A happy place to be! This was our eighth family holiday at Wheeldon Trees, our tenth overall!
It really is our happy place! The accommodation is so good with extremely comfortable cottages supplied with the sort of china and glassware that you would be very happy to have at home. The amount of baby stuff that can be borrowed is phenomenal and means it’s much easier to bring small people. There is also a wide range of toys and games to borrow.
This time we took the newly available Farmhouse as one of our three lets. It gave us an ideal base for our family of thirteen to cook, eat round a large table and to have two sitting rooms to allow for a variety of different activities. We asked Steve in advance about a barbecue and he and Hazel provided us with a good one which was well used.
The air hockey in the Long Room provided lots of pleasure and we enjoyed a tournament in which everyone from four to seventy five participated! The views are amazing and the sunsets to treasure. Running up High Wheeldon is a daily pleasure for most of the party. The bicycles were also taken out on a couple of days.
Hazel, Steve and their team are so welcoming and thoughtful. We would really hope to return again and cannot recommend it highly enough!

A rare gem of a place you'll return to again and again. I'm reluctant to write this review as I don't want this wonderful slice of luxury to be booked up when I want to come again! My second visit, the last 7 years ago with much younger children and different owners. It was good then but it is sublime now. Steve and Hazel were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the little touches of free condiments and the honesty shop make this such a rare gem of a place. Everything you could want and more is supplied in the cottage (I stayed in Elliott) and of the highest spec. From a tray for dirty boots to head torches supplied, the elements are also catered for! Gorgeously comfortable beds, a welcome hamper, a games room, a little courtyard and alexa add up to as comfortable a stay as is possible when single parenting!
The location is stunning with High Wheeldon right behind the Cottages and an easy climb for even little legs to feel they've achieved. Emergency ice cream and chocolate are available in the honesty shop, and Buxton is only a 10-15min drive away, whilst the ever popular Mam Tor is only 25mins. Peaceful and tranquil. The only consideration I'd have for future bookings is that Elliott cottage was quite dark downstairs and we often spend a bit of time in the accommodation chilling out. I will most definitely be back!

Lovely Break What an amazing place! We spent 4 nights in Priestley cottage and then moved to the Farm House where we were joined by my family for the weekend. Both places were so beautifully and well equipped. In reach of grest places like Chatsworth House (with reduced admission tickets available) and Dovedale as well as good walking straight from the door. Attention to detail was fantastic and Steve and Hazel were very responsive to any requests.

First Class Cottage - Definitely recommend for comfort, peace and quiet. Returning visit to Wheeldon Trees after 14 years. Stayed in Priestley Cottage for five nights. We had an amazing stay, top marks to Hazel and Steve on the fabulous refurbishments. Every need was catered for and the Welcome Pack a very kind and generous touch, we enjoyed a glass of the chilled wine sat at the outside tables admiring the fabulous views and listening to the birds, cows and sheep. The location is stunning, perfect for peace and quiet. The cottage is 5 star, very comfortable and cosy, the bed was huge, slept better than at home. Looking forward to visiting again.

First class Derbyshire retreat. We stayed in a one bed cottage at Wheeldon Trees for one week. The cottage and furnishings were superb - well thought out, top quality and more than we expected. The welcome pack included the things that meant we could relax as soon as we walked through the door - teabags, coffee, milk butter etc., as well as treats which were very much enjoyed later (wine, chocs etc). The location is ideal, being quiet but very close to several lovely towns and villages, so we never had to travel too far for a day out or food. The onside honesty shop was great; treats such as ice cream, snacks, pizza plus essentials such as milk. But little extras such as jams, condiments and even fruit were on the house, which made us feel really looked after.
The EV charger was a god send though. And well used by several guests. Steve and Hazel could not be more helpful and went out of their way to ensure we were looked after.
We took advantage of the discounted tickets to Chatsworth House available through our hosts, saving us £10. Really recommend this. Although the weather was pants during our week, the cottage was so comfortable that we were able to fully relax there and enjoy sometime indoors watching Netflix and sampling the local cheeses and wine.
One restaurant to recommend is The Seafood Cave and Grill in Matlock Bath. An gem hidden in the main street between the many fish and chip shops.... superb, high quality fish dishes, and a fair few meat ones. Best meals we have had in a varying time.
So, all in all, we highly recommend Wheeldon Trees.

Brilliant dog friendly cottage We had a fabulous stay in the dog friendly cottage Lomas. It was extremely well equipped with everything you need. Our family of 4 plus our dog had a wonderful week. Being able to walk straight from the cottage is great if you don't always want to be jumping in the car. The dog field was brilliant, fully enclosed and a lovely size for dogs to have a great run round in a safe environment.
Would highly recommend and am sure we will be back.
Thank you to Steve and Hazel for the lovely welcome, the tote bag with goodies and the fabulous cottages.

Highly recommended cottage I booked Priestley Cottage for me, my husband and my sister with the main aim being to attend some events at the Buxton Festival. This cottage was delightful - so well equipped, comfortable and in a lovely quiet situation even though it is one of ten similar dwellings. There are gorgeous walks from the door, pubs nearby and Buxton only 5 miles away. The owners were so friendly and helpful, but unobtrusive. However, they were always available to sort out any problems.

This ticked all our boxes and exceeded expectations For us Wheeldon Trees Cottages is the perfect location. When looking for holiday accommodation, we have a lot of boxes to tick as my husband is a wheelchair user and we have a dog but here they ticked every box and exceeded expectations. From the warm welcome we received from Steve and Hazel on arrival with the very generous welcome bag of goodies, to the last day of our week long holiday , we loved our stay.
The cottage we stayed in was well adapted to my husbands needs and there was great attention to detail with torches and umbrellas provided etc. It was extremely clean and comfortable.
The location is stunning with fantastic views and many walks straight from the door step. Should the weather not be good for walking, there is a well stocked games room to enjoy. Although a very rural location, there are a good selection of pubs providing excellent food within a few miles and Buxton is just 10 minutes away with all the facilities of a good sized town.

A relaxing stay at Nadin cottage We booked a very last minute 3 night stay and we were delighted with every aspect of our short break at Wheeldon Cottages. The cottage was perfect for our family of 2 adults, a 21 year old, and our teenager, so comfortable and cosy especially after a long drive. The welcome pack was great and the kitchen was very well equipped too. The views were fantastic, with walks available from the door. The games room was a hit and it was great to be able to grab a book to read. There's plenty to do in the surrounding areas and a good local pub not too far away. We didn't get a chance to test out the e-bikes so that's a must next time, because we will definitely return, I'd have no hesitation booking again.

Fabulous place My first ever review on Tripadvisor but this place is worthy! Booked very last minute two days before on the strength of the reviews (tip - book direct not through Airbnb). We came with our dog and asked for a dog crate to be available, no problem at all and it was in the cottage when we arrived. The cottages and surroundings are beautiful and the honest shop was fab. We didn’t have time to use the electric bikes but wish we could have. We left a phone charging wire behind and Steve kindly posted to us and didn’t even ask for postage. Book - you won’t regret it. We plan to return!

Amazing! Wow! Just wow! We have no negative comments to give at all. Wheeldon trees cottages are in a stunning location, they are decorated and furnished to the highest standards. There was a welcome pack like no other we have experienced before. The owners are just lovely. Our fellow holiday makers in the other properties were really friendly too which is always a good thing. The beds were comfy which I was relieved about as I suffer with lower back pain. The honesty shop on site was really well stocked and a fabulous idea (not that we needed it, but brilliant). The location is close to Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock and a fabulous village called Hartington. There's an equipment store that I guarantee will solve your problem if you've forgotten anything. And we are definitely planning a return visit which speaks volumes if you ask me.

Truly a jewel accommodation Amazing cottage and amazing hosts. Everything in the house was incredibly high quality, well put together, and functional. We travelled with a young toddler (2 1/2 years), and Steve and Hazel were able to provide us with everything we could possibly need, from highchairs to bed bumpers to stair gates - they were really a treat to deal with and went the extra mile to give us the best possible service, down to sourcing a delicious gluten-free cake for my wife's birthday, allowing us to do an early check-in, and letting us stay one extra day when we decided we loved the place so much we didn't want to leave!
The area is incredible and there are some very good pubs and excellent walks that can be reached from the cottages - for when it rains (and it does), the "long room" has the best assorment of games, movies, books and toys that I've ever seen!
Really an amazing place. Would go back tomorrow if I could!

Another great 5 night stay in a remote and peaceful setting Our second visit but the first one with Steve and Hazel as owners and great and welcoming hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them. Even better than the first time although we did miss the alpacas. We stayed in the Sheldon which is all on one level and ideal for elderly or disabled guests, leave the car right outside. Plenty of hilly walks to take the dog, some of the locals pubs were not open for some of the week, but great meals were had at the Royal Oak and Bulls Head along with several lunches at the bookstore. Already looking forward to going again.
