Ashbourne Christmas Lights Switch On

There’s nowhere quite so beautiful as Ashbourne at Christmas and the town goes all for for its Christmas Lights Switch On event.

If you’re planning a cosy cottage escape or an invigorating autumn minibreak with us, make sure to mark your calendar for a truly magical start to the season.

The pretty market town sits on the edge of the Peak District National Park. What’s more, it’s only 20 minutes away from Wheeldon Trees Cottages.

The town kicks off the holidays with a fantastic celebration that perfectly blends traditional festive cheer with a little unexpected fun.

A Day of Festive Fun Awaits

Join the town on Saturday 15th November for an afternoon and evening packed with entertainment. There’s shopping too and of course, that spectacular moment when the town is bathed in light.

The Pre-Christmas Shop

Start your day nice and early at the Christmas Fair in the Upper Ballroom, Town Hall, open from 11 am to 6 pm. This is your chance to browse a wonderful selection of hand-crafted gifts and unique Christmas ideas from local artisans. It’s the perfect place to pick up a special souvenir.

Entertainment on the Market Place

From 4:30 pm, the atmosphere builds in the Market Place with festive music and entertainment. Get ready for a lively build-up featuring carol singing. A Master of Ceremonies will keep the energy high, and there will be some amazing costumed characters roaming the streets!

This year’s theme is a fun combination of fantasy and adventure, featuring characters from both Star Wars and Disney’s Frozen. Keep an eye out for the man himself, Father Christmas and Mrs Claus, making a special appearance with their helpful elves, alongside patrolling Imperial Stormtroopers and even the Grinch!

The Grand Switch-On: 5:30 pm

Gather around the Christmas tree for the highlight of the evening: the big light up at 5:30 pm!

Watch as Ashbourne truly comes to life with sparkling Christmas illuminations. It’s a heartwarming, traditional event that officially signals the start of the holiday season in the Peaks and is guaranteed to leave you feeling festive.

Planning Your Peak District Minibreak
