Trekking Tom Experiences - Wheeldon Trees Cottages

Trekking Tom Experiences will lead a Dark Sky Hike from Castleton on Monday 6 October 2025. Visitors to the region can now book tickets for the stargazing event.

The 4.5 hour hike will start from Castleton Visitor Centre, Buxton Road at 6pm.

The Great Ridge by Moonlight

The Dark Peak area around Castleton is famed for its clear skies, making it a prime location for stargazing. On this hike, you’ll ascend approximately 1,500ft, taking in some of the most recognisable peaks in the region: Mam Tor, Barker Bank, Back Tor, and Lose Hill.

This hike is graded as suitable for Beginner Hikers.

You’ll set off from Castleton Visitor Centre as dusk is settling at 6:00 pm. The route is designed to stick to clear, easy-to-follow paths, keeping you close to local villages while still offering that wonderful sense of high-moor seclusion. You’ll walk at a steady, comfortable pace, with regular stops that allow you to pause, adjust your eyes to the darkness, and truly absorb the stillness of the night.

Stargazing and Night Navigation

If the skies are clear, you’re in for an astronomical treat. Free from the light pollution of major cities, the Peak District provides an amazing opportunity to spot constellations, distant planets, and perhaps even the incredible band of the Milky Way.

But even if cloud cover appears, the experience remains unforgettable. Walking under the cover of night transforms the landscape. Your senses sharpen, the sounds of the moor become clearer, and the gentle, dark outline of the hills feels profoundly different to the daytime vista.

This journey is fully guided by Tom Smith, a qualified Mountain Leader with over twenty years of experience in hill walking and mountaineering. Tom’s expertise, honed partly during his time in the Royal Navy, ensures not only your safety with professional night navigation and preparation, but also an educational and inspiring experience.

“I’ve always felt drawn to wild places… My goal is to create experiences that are safe, inspiring, and unforgettable—helping people connect with nature and push their boundaries, one step at a time.” – Tom Smith, Founder of Trekking Tom Experiences
