Matlock Illuminations - Image Derbyshire Dales District Council

Experience the Matlock Illuminations this October.

Autumn in the Peak District is a time for stunning colours and cosy nights. However, in Derbyshire, it also means the return of the Matlock Bath Illuminations.

This historic, council-run event—which first celebrated Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee back in 1897—has kicked off its season on the River Derwent and is ready to dazzle visitors throughout October.

October Glow-Up in the Peak District

If you’re looking for a unique event to fill your autumn short break, this is it. The Matlock Bath Illuminations are running every Saturday and Sunday until October 26th. There’s an extra event on Friday, October 24th, making it the perfect highlight for your half-term plans.

The centrepiece is the spectacular parade of illuminated boats, which float down the River Derwent. These aren’t just any boats; they are transformed by the dedicated Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders’ Association into intricate, sparkling, and often whimsical displays.

This year’s illuminated fleet includes a fantastic range of themes, perfect for all ages:

Look out for familiar faces and themes from cartoon heroes like Bluey and Fireman Sam, alongside classic films like Dumbo. See incredible illuminated tributes to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music. A traditional candle boat, lit the way boats were over a century ago, joins the fleet, alongside a moving Royal barge and a commemorative ‘For the Fallen’ display marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Every Saturday in October and the final Sunday (October 26th) also feature a brilliant fireworks finale, lighting up the gorge in a stunning display of colour.
