75 Year Anniversary Of The Peak District National Park

2026 is set to be a momentous year for our corner of the world as we celebrate 75 years of the Peak District National Park.

On 17 April 1951, the Peak District was designated as the UK’s very first national park, and this year we are incredibly proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

At Wheeldon Trees Cottages, we feel lucky every day to call Earl Sterndale home. Unlike many global parks that are uninhabited wilderness, the Peaks are home to 38,000 people. It’s a place where history, industry and community thrive alongside breathtaking natural beauty.

A Legacy of Access and Care

The 75th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the hard-fought battles that won us the “right to roam.” We owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneering campaigners of the 1932 Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, whose bravery paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today.

As we look forward, the focus for 2026 shifts to how we can protect this landscape for the next 75 years.

Key themes for the anniversary year include:

Conservation and Peatland Restoration

Vital work to combat climate change and protect our unique moorlands.

Accessibility and Sustainable Tourism

Ensuring everyone can enjoy the park while preserving it for the future – a mission we hold dear at Wheeldon Trees.

Heritage and “Landscapes Unlocked”

A brand new digital archive featuring 40,000 historic images of the park is being launched to tell the story of the people who shaped this land.

What’s Happening in 2026?

While the official anniversary falls in April, the celebrations will run throughout the year across the five counties the park touches: Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.

75th Anniversary Ranger-Led Walks

The National Park Authority has curated a special series of walks to celebrate. Highlights include:

  • 4 April: The Summit of Shutlingsloe (Cheshire’s Matterhorn).
  • 5 April: An Easter Mermaid walk on the flanks of Kinder Scout.
  • 18 April: The Eyam Round, exploring the fascinating history of the “Plague Village.”
  • 26 April: A journey through the stunning Lathkill Dale.

For those looking for a bit more adventure, several landmark events are scheduled:

  • The Peak District Ultra Challenge (4-5 July): A huge event starting in Bakewell with 25km to 100km routes.
  • The Peak District Challenge (18-19 September): Five levels of difficulty starting and finishing in Hathersage.
