Looking to meet Santa in the Peak District this Christmas? To make your holiday planning…
Everyone loves a Bakewell Tart, but what’s beyond this in the beautiful town of Bakewell?
A short, twenty-minute drive from the tranquil surroundings of your cottage at Wheeldon Trees lies Bakewell. It’s a delightful historic town that is an absolute must-visit during your Peak District break.
With its picture-postcard setting on the River Wye, pretty courtyards and deep history, Bakewell offers the perfect blend of charming independent shops, cultural immersion and accessible countryside walks.
Chatsworth House and Garden
Your exploration of the area simply has to include Chatsworth House and Garden. It’s just over ten minutes’ drive from Bakewell itself. This phenomenal stately home, set within the vast Chatsworth Estate, is a centre for creativity with a collection of art and artifacts spanning 4,000 years. You can easily dedicate a full day here. Explore over twenty-five majestic rooms, from the Painted Hall to the Sculpture Gallery, and trace the history of seventeen generations of the Devonshire family. Beyond the house, you can lose yourself in the extensive gardens. Alternatively venture into the surrounding 1,000-acre parkland. Perhaps follow the popular walk through Stand Wood to discover the Hunting Tower and Aqueduct.
All Saints Church
Back in Bakewell, seek out All Saints Church. It’s a magnificent Grade I-listed building that anchors the town’s spiritual history. Founded in 920 and even mentioned in the Domesday Book, it stands today as one of England’s finest medieval parish churches. As you explore its grounds, keep an eye out for the impressive hand-carved Saxon crosses. There’s also a large number of beautifully carved stones in the entranceway, vivid reminders of its ancient heritage.
Old House Museum
Tucked away behind All Saints Church is the charming Old House Museum. As the oldest house in Bakewell, this award-winning museum, originally a Parsonage dating from 1534, is one of the best-preserved 15th-century houses in the entire country. It offers a fascinating journey through the history of the Peak District over thousands of years. It showcases everything from Tudor artifacts to Macedonian ceremonial swords.
Pudding or Tart?
No visit to Bakewell is complete without indulging in its famed local delicacy. While there is much debate, you simply must sample the Bakewell Pudding (or the equally delicious Bakewell Tart) from one of the many local tearooms and cafes. It’s a delightful, buttery tradition. For a full dining experience, nearby options like The Pilsley Inn and The Beeley Inn offer classic pub fare using locally sourced produce. Much of the produce is straight from the Chatsworth Estate. Alternatively, the elegant Cavendish Hotel at Baslow provides a more formal setting for afternoon teas or fine dining, showcasing the best of local and seasonal ingredients.
Walking Bakewell
Finally, Bakewell is a haven for walkers. From the town, you can easily access scenic routes like the Monsal Trail or follow the Greenways. A highly recommended, gentle walk takes you upstream from All Saints Church to Ashford-in-the-Water. You will pass through the lovely meadowland known as ‘Scott’s Garden’. In addition, it provides views of the historic Jacobean Manor, Holme Hall. For the ambitious, you can even walk directly from Bakewell to Chatsworth House. The walk will take you through beautiful woodlands and along the River Derwent, making for a truly memorable day out.
