Christmas in the Peak District

Christmas is a truly magical time in the Peak District and in the coming weeks I will try to update the Wheeldon Trees blog with all the events taking place.

With our cosy cottages at Wheeldon Trees as your base, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy all the festive cheer the national park has to offer. This year, the holiday season is sparkling. There are some fantastic events, and we’ve got the inside scoop on some of our favourites.

The Christmas Grotto at Poole’s Cavern

Step into a festive wonderland deep underground at Poole’s Cavern in Buxton. This spectacular natural cave is being transformed into a magnificent grotto. What’s more, Santa himself is making a return to his favourite spot outside of the North Pole! This year, the event is bigger and better than ever. There are some exciting new additions for the whole family.

Meet Father Christmas

The man in red will be flying in from the North Pole every weekend from November 29th. He will then be there daily from December 22nd to 24th. Each child will receive a gift and can then explore the beautifully illuminated cavern.

A Brand New Grotto Experience with Mrs Claus

For 2025, you can also meet Mrs Claus and Santa’s elves in their very own grotto. These new slots will run on selected dates including weekends on November 29th & 30th, as well as on December 7th, 22nd, and 23rd.

Santa Paws

Don’t let your four-legged friends miss out on the fun! The new “Santa Paws” experience allows you to bring your dog to meet Santa. Every dog will receive a special gift and a photo opportunity. These sessions are scheduled for December 19th from 4pm to 6pm.

SEN Sessions

To ensure a calm and welcoming environment for everyone, the grotto will be offering a special SEN (Special Educational Needs) session on Saturday, December 20th from 9:30am to 11:30am. These sessions will be a tranquil experience with no music and a focus on twinkling lights.

Tickets for all Poole’s Cavern events are incredibly popular and sell out fast, so be sure to book your spot in advance on their website.

More Festive Fun

While Poole’s Cavern is a must-do, the Peak District is brimming with other festive events that are perfect for a day trip from your cottage.

• Chatsworth House Christmas Market. Browse over 100 stalls offering a wide range of gifts and treats, all set within the beautiful grounds of the Chatsworth Estate. The market runs from November 8th to December 14th.
• Christmas at Chatsworth. The house itself is transformed into a winter wonderland with a different festive theme each year, and the gardens host a stunning light and sound trail. This magical experience runs from November 8th to January 4th.
• Peak Rail Santa Trains. Take a magical steam train ride with Santa and his helpers for an unforgettable festive journey through the Derbyshire countryside.
• Bakewell Christmas Market. Enjoy the quintessential charm of Bakewell’s Christmas Market on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th November.
